Although she was unable to make it for the tournament, Martina Hingis made a welcome appearance at the Family Circle Cup on Thursday afternoon to accept this year's Meredith Inspiration Award. It is presented annually to a female athlete who, by her actions on and off the playing field, has inspired women worldwide to achieve their personal and professional goals.

"Martina Hingis is often recognized for her achievements on the tennis court but today we want to celebrate her humanitarian efforts off court that serve as an inspiration to us all," said Nancy Weber, CMO of the Meredith Corporation. "She truly understands the importance of giving back and there have been many organizations over the years that have benefited from her generosity. Through her efforts, she not only helps create awareness for their programs but because of her status, they receive much needed exposure."

Hingis has been lending her support to a number of worldwide organizations for years. In 2000 she accepted the title of World Health Organizations Goodwill Ambassador for Polio Eradication, helping launch the "Match Point Against Polio" campaign and making a series of appearances around the world. Hingis has also lent support to the United Nations Development Program "Teams To End Poverty" campaign, as well as the Bosconia Program in Colombia, which helps address the safety of street children. Last September she also donated money to the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata; the organization has homes around the world that provide support for refugees, abandoned and sick children in need of help.

As winner of the Meredith Inspiration Award Hingis will receive a $5,000 grant to be given to the charity of her choice. She has decided to match the $5,000 and donate a total of $10,000 to UNICEF, for the Basic Education and Gender Equality initiative. UNICEF advocates quality basic education for all children - girls and boys - with an emphasis on gender equality and eliminating disparities of all kinds. They work with a range of local, national and international partners, to bring structural changes needed to achieve social justice and equity for all.

"Over the course of the last few years, I have come to realize how fortunate I am to be able to do what I love and to be successful at it," Hingis said. "I am honored to receive this award from Meredith Corporation. Through UNICEF this money will inspire and motivate young girls and women throughout the world, to realize their dreams and aspirations."

"At UNICEF we believe education is a basic human right that is vital to personal and societal development and well being," stated Caryl M. Stern, Chief Operating Officer, US Fund for UNICEF. "Because of Martina's generosity we'll be able to use this money to give girls and women the knowledge and skills necessary to change their lives for the better."
